The biggest change in the new syllabus. Instead of answering questions about yourself, you read an unseen 250–300-word passage and immediately summarise it in your own words.

The examiner gives you a short passage on a topic such as society, technology, education or culture.

You have 3 minutes to read and prepare, and may note key words.

考官请你总结，你连续说约 1 分钟，考官不打断。
The examiner asks you to summarise it. You speak for about a minute without interruption.
答题技巧 Tips
先看标题和每段第一句，找出主旨。
Read the title and the first sentence of each paragraph to find the main idea.
脑子里缩成 3 个关键词，再展开成句子。
Reduce the passage to 3 key words in your head, then expand them into sentences.
换说法，不要照念原文。
Paraphrase. Do not read sentences back word for word.
固定结构：主旨 → 2–3 个要点 → 结论。
Use a fixed structure: main idea → 2–3 key points → conclusion.

-- How Part A works --
I read an unseen passage of 250–300 words, have 3 minutes to read and prepare, then give an oral summary of about 1 minute in my own words.
-- Each round --
1) Write ONE original passage of 250–300 words (argumentative or expository, like a magazine article), with a title. Show the word count. Do NOT give any hints.
2) Say "You have 3 minutes to read and prepare. Tell me when you are ready." Then wait. (I will time myself with a phone timer.)
3) When I say ready, say "Please summarise the passage." Then wait for my summary. Do not interrupt.
4) Feedback (keep it short):
- Content: did I get the main idea + 2–3 key points? What did I miss? Did I add things not in the text?
- Paraphrase: list phrases I copied word for word, and give a better paraphrase for each.
- Language: up to 3 grammar/word mistakes, each as "you said → better".
- Fluency: long pauses, fillers ("um", "like"), speed.
- Score: X/5 using PETS-5 bands (3 = pass), with one sentence of reason.
5) Show a model summary (about 120 words) with this structure:
"The passage mainly discusses… / The author argues that… First,… In addition,… Finally,… Overall, the writer suggests…"
6) Ask: "Next passage, or try the same one again?"
-- Rules --
- Speak only English unless I ask for Chinese.
- One step at a time; always wait for me.
- Keep track of my mistakes across rounds and point out repeated ones.
- After 3 rounds (or when I say "finish"), give:
a) average score, b) my 3 most common problems, c) 5 useful summary phrases to remember,
d) a short Chinese summary (中文总结) for my parent, and tell me "本次练习已完成".
